How to go to Xerokambos

By car

Going to Xerokambos by car or motorcycle is recommended. Apart from the ease of getting there, you should consider the ease of getting around in Xerokambos. It is very spread out and the distances from one beach to the other or from the hotel to the taverna (could be up to 2 km) are be more than some people are willing to walk, especially in the hot sun or at night. Besides, you will be able to visit other places close by, like Kato Zakros, a lovely little seaside place with some of the greatest Minoan ruins.
Note: As it is a long drive (approx. 4.5 hours from Heraklion), you better start with a full tank of petrol or fill up in a main town. The last petrol station on the way to Xerokambos is in Ziros (7 km).
 

By bus

You cannot go all the way to Xerokambos by bus. You can go as far as Ziros or Zakros and then either catch a ride to Xerokambos, or make arrangements with the place where you're staying to come and pick you up. The road from Ziros is paved, winding as anything with breathtaking views of Xerokambos from above as you approach. The road from Zakros now also paved.
There is also the possibility to get a taxi to take you from Ziros to Xerokambos (about 15 km). It would cost about 18 euros. Taxi: Kostas Aerakis (in Armeni village nearby)-tel. 28430-31307, mobile: 6932-015292. (Phones: see Calling Crete)
If you are taking the bus, below is the bus schedule. It is highly recommended to double check the times of departure (Heraklion bus station: 2810-245017, 245019, 245020, Sitia bus station tel: 28430-22272). Even our expert team was taken by surprise when  the times had changed on our way back from Xerokambos a few days later! But, unreliable as they are, they can be quite fun sometimes, as the driver stops and has a "raki" with some locals at a village on the way (if you're lucky -  or... the only passenger - you might be treated to one too!)
